This year, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, are likely going to spend Christmas with their children and the Queen at Sandringham. Their three young children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will already be familiar with this tradition and will probably even get to participate in the royal family’s annual walk to church on Christmas day.
Although the duke and duchess spend all their cozy holidays together now, it hasn’t always been the case. In fact, there has been Christmases past when the only gift Prince William gave to Middleton was the puffy, red eyes that come from a good, hard cry.
Kate Middleton was invited to spend the holidays with the royal family before marriage
Both Prince William and Middleton attended the University of St Andrews in 2001. Apparently, she caught his eye at a charity fashion show and though they had seen each other around campus it was the first time he became acutely aware of her.
Before long, he had asked her to sit with him at the dining hall and they quickly became fast friends.
By the time the pair had finished university, Duchess Kate was sharing a flat with Prince William and his friends and being seen with him at public, royal events.
In 2006, William asked Kate to join his family at Sandringham for the Royal Family’s traditional Christmas lunch. It was the first time someone who was “just a girlfriend” had ever received an invitation to do so.
Royal biographer Katie Nicholl, explained in her book “The Making of a Royal Romance“, that this was “the first time a girlfriend had received such an invitation.” Middleton ultimately decided not to attend, in favor of staying home with her own family instead.
Prince William promised to join the Middletons over the holiday season
That same year, Prince William had promised Middleton he’d join her family celebrations for the holidays. Apparently, he was supposed to join her family for Hogmanay.
Hogmanay is the Scottish New Year holiday which spans in time from New Year’s Eve to the second of January. Traditionally, Scottish families would gather over these few days to celebrate the holidays with one another, rather than on Christmas day.
Despite the appearances from their cute holiday cards this year, their Christmases haven’t always been sunshine and roses. Prince William didn’t make it to Hogmanay to spend the holidays with the Middletons in 2006.
The Prince never showed up for Christmas and ruined the holidays for Kate
Prince William called Middleton on Boxing Day to inform her that he had changed his mind and would not be joining her, thus not seeing her at all over the special holiday season. This, reportedly, left the future duchess in tears and ruined her holiday festivities. He didn’t give her much notice that he wouldn’t be coming to spend the holidays with them.
Shortly after, the couple faced a separation in 2007. Allegedly due to commitment issues and worries about how serious their relationship was going to get. Reports suggest Middleton gave Prince William an ultimatum regarding their relationship which spurred the couple back together.
Now, each Christmas runs like clockwork while the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spend their holidays together with the queen or the Middleton family. This year’s edition of their family holiday card has already been leaked online and rumors have surfaced that they intend to allow both Prince George and Princess Charlotte to join the family in their Christmas Day church walk.
Even though it seems Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are skipping the Royal holiday festivities to spend time with Markle’s mother, the Sun reports that Prince George and Princess Charlotte will be in attendance for the first time this year.
