The Significance of the Latest Divorces Roiling the Royal Family - E! NEWS

For a family so fundamentally averse to divorce, the royals sure do a lot of divorcing.

Queen Elizabeth II could have used a PR break after an already disconcertingly eventful start to the new year. But just as the dust was seemingly starting to settle around the smoldering crater left when Prince Harry and Meghan Markleblew up their position within the royal family, there came word that another implosion was taking place nine spots down the line of succession.

Some months after privately separating, Peter Phillips, son of Princess Anne and the queen's eldest grandchild, confirmed that he and wife Autumn Phillips are getting divorced after 12 years of marriage.

"After informing HM the Queen and members of both families last year, Peter and Autumn jointly agreed to separate. They had reached the conclusion that this was the best course of action for their two children and ongoing friendship," a spokesperson for the family said earlier this month. "The decision to divorce and share custody came about after many months of discussions and although sad, is an amicable one. The couples' first priority will remain the continued well-being and upbringing of their wonderful daughters Savannah and Isla."

Both sides of the family "were naturally sad at the announcement, but fully supportive of Peter and Autumn in the joint decision to co-parent their children. Both Peter and Autumn have remained in Gloucestershire to bring up their two children where they have been settled for a number of years. Peter and Autumn have requested privacy and compassion for their children while the family continues to adapt to these changes."

Considering the "many months of discussions," the queen wasn't blindsided by this announcement, but the Phillips' statement did come shortly after The Sun ran with the news that their marriage was over—so the report seemed to hasten their public comment.

Regardless, it's a sad outcome for any family, as Peter well knows. His parents, Anne and Capt. Mark Phillips, separated in 1989 when Peter was 11 and—despite an initial declaration that they had no plans to divorce—divorced in 1992. Anne remains married to Timothy Laurence, the second husband she got a head start with while still married to the first. Mark and his second wife, Sandy Pflueger, with whom he has another daughter, Stephanie Phillips, announced their intention to divorce in 2012.

Peter and his younger sister, Zara Tindall, were not given royal titles, Princess Anne figuring the lack of monarchical baggage would allow them a more normal childhood—and adulthood, for that matter. "Her advice generally about life has been invaluable," Peter said about their mother in a 2010 BBC special celebrating Anne's 60th birthday. "Whenever we may have got slightly above our station she'd be the first one to bring us back down to earth."

He went to Gordonstoun School in Scotland—Prince Philip's now co-ed alma mater that he insisted Prince Charles attend back when it was all-boys and further from home than Charles would have liked—and had a grand time, playing rugby and serving as a head boy. He spent his gap year in Australia, then attended the University of Exeter.

Armed with a degree in sports science, Peter went to work for Jaguar as a corporate hospitality manager, then was an account manager for Williams Grand Prix Engineering, whose Formula One team is ROKiT Williams Racing. Since 2018 he's been chairman and CEO of City Racing, which stages horse races in city centers around the globe.

He met Autumn Kelly in 2003 at the Canadian Grand Prix, held in her native Montreal. Autumn—who has two siblings, older brother Kevin and a twin brother, Chris, and divorced parents—graduated from McGill University and was working as a management consultant when she met Mark—whom, because no royal title preceded him (and apparently he didn't put on airs), she had no idea was a member of the royal family for weeks until she glimpsed him in a TV special about Prince William, in honor of the future king's 21st birthday.

As fate would have it, Autumn—who fresh out of university had turned down a job with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service—was already planning to move to England to work for a computer firm, and once she had relocated her relationship with Peter got more serious. They eventually moved in together, splitting time between a flat in London and a cottage at Gatcombe Park, Anne's estate in Gloucester.

The couple's engagement was announced in July 2007, and Autumn started being included in more big events, such as the queen's 80th birthday celebration and the monarch and Prince Philip's 60th wedding anniversary dinner that November. Her fiancé's grandmother also invited Autumn to join her on an extensive tour of the Scottish isles, which are very near and dear to her heart.

Autumn was raised Catholic and gave it up to join the Church of England—a necessity if Peter was going to retain a place in the line of succession (he's currently 15th)—but she kept her Canadian passport (and has retained her Canadian citizenship to this day).

She and Peter married on May 17, 2008, at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, the spot where Harry and Meghan would wed 10 years later. Kate Middleton's solo presence while William was attending a friend's wedding in Africa also signified that the two of them, dating off and on for several years, were truly serious (though it didn't work out for Harry and his date, Chelsy Davy).

Welcoming Savannah in 2010 and Isla in 2012, Peter and Autumn have led a relatively private life while also being included in all the big family events and traditions, such as weddings, Christmas with the queen at Sandringham, Trooping the Color and the annual Royal Ascot. Their big eyebrow-raising moment to date occurred early on, when they sold their wedding photos to Hello! for a reported £500,000, without securing the queen's approval.

"It's not great," a senior royal source described the situation to The Telegraph at the time. But life went on.

"They're just a family, they're happy, they have great relationships with each other—they're very close," Autumn told the CBC in 2016, adding that the queen "knows more about Canada than I ever will."

She and Peter were all smiles at Royal Ascot in June, though their last public appearance together appears to have been in September at the Braemar Gathering, a centuries-old annual event frequented by the queen, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Appearances aside, apparently their domestic bliss was unraveling behind the scenes—and they weren't the only ones.

Yet another marriage was breaking up while all eyes in Britain and beyond were on Harry and Meghan's decision to step down as full-time royals, as well as on Prince Andrew's increasingly sordid-sounding ties to late businessman Jeffrey Epstein—who the Duke of York still had a friendship with after Epstein became a convicted sex offender—and his reported reluctance to cooperate with authorities in their ongoing investigation.

A week after Peter and Autumn Phillips confirmed their separation, the queen's nephew, David Armstrong-Jones—the only son of the monarch's late sister, Princess Margaret—announced that he and his wife of more than 26 years, Serena Stanhope, were also divorcing. They have two children together, son Charles, Viscount Linley, 20, and daughter Lady Margarita, 18 (who was a bridesmaid at William and Kate's wedding when she was 8 years old).

In royal speak, David was Viscount Linley (he has been David Linley in his professional life) and became Lord Snowden, or 2nd Earl of Snowden, when his father died in 2017; his dad, photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones, became Lord Snowden when he married Margaret in 1960. They separated in 1976 and divorced in 1978.

As a child, David—founder of a high-end furniture and design business who has gone from fifth to 21st in line to the throne over the course of his 58 years—spent a lot of time with his aunt, the queen, when his mother was busy traveling.

And though he's never been a working royal, David remains "very, very close to the Queen and Prince Charles. He goes to Sandringham at Christmas and turns up at Balmoral in the summer," a friend of his recently told the Daily Mail.

He and Serena have also led their lives somewhat privately, though David's late mother—who defiantly thumbed her nose at royal propriety time and again—remains the subject of endless fascination. And the press is always perfectly happy to pounce on a scandal, such as when David and his sister, Lady Sarah Chatto, sold some of Princess Margaret's possessions, including her Politmore tiara (which she wore at her wedding when she married their father) at auction, netting roughly £10 million, reportedly to go toward paying the inheritance tax on her estate.

Coincidentally, David and Serena were described to the Daily Mail as "the Glumleys" when they were photographed not looking particularly joyful at Peter and Autumn Phillips' wedding in 2008.

"Serena is not a charity lunch girl—she's happiest doing the school run," a family friend told the paper. "But David's away so much in Russia and the States making money [with his bespoke furniture business] that she'll be making another life for herself if he's not careful." Between 2010 and 2014, the press-shy Serena owned a home goods boutique, Serena Linley Provence, in Knightsbridge.

As of 2017, at least, they were still living the high life together, vacationing at Chateau d'Autet, their country home in Provence, with Charles and Margarita.

"He is the hardest-working royal—albeit not for the royal family," David's friend told the Mail. "He is endlessly abroad through his Christie's role. He is their go-to rainmaker executive [as the auction house's honorary chairman for Europe, the Middle East, Russia and India]. But all the travel put a strain on the marriage.

"Serena spends most of her time in Gloucestershire. He lives in Kensington. It's been a slow drift apart. I think the impetus for the split is with her but she is very sad about it. It is going to be tough for David. Everyone is surprised. Even if things weren't perfect between them, they are both very family oriented. Their main focus now will be on ensuring that their two children and them remain a family unit even if they are no longer living together as a couple."

"The Earl and Countess of Snowdon have amicably agreed that their marriage has come to an end and that they shall be divorced," read the statement from their household last week. "They ask that the press respect their privacy and that of their family."

The most infamous split in modern royal history, however, remains that of Prince Harry's parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, who separated in 1992 (capping off the queen's infamous "annus horribilis" featuring the end of three of her four children's marriages) and divorced in 1996, barely a year before Diana died in a car wreck.

David and Serena's wedding in October 1993 at St. Margaret's Chapel in Westminster, a far splashier affair than Princess Anne's second wedding attended by 30 people the previous December, was a welcome bright moment at the time, coming after so much turmoil.

In addition to wanting to protect his wife and son Archie from the emotional and physical dangers of media scrutiny when it gets too close for comfort, Prince Harry is surely aware of just how many marriages in his family have ended in divorce in the past 30 years. Meghan's parents also divorced when she was a kid—and Meghan divorced her first husband in 2013.

So, with two more splits—apparently the divorce rate in the royal family since the queen got married in 1947 is now exponentially higher than the national average among all people in the U.K.—making headlines, Harry and Meghan may rest more assured than ever that they've made the right choice.

But they have also stated their intention to become financially independent and, although they've agreed to stop using the term "royal" in future business and charity endeavors once they detach fully on March 31, the reason for their celebrity is unshakable—and every attempt at personal financial gain will be met with the utmost scrutiny, even if they're going by plain ol' Harry and Meghan.

Peter Phillips—who has never even been a working royal—and Princess Diana's niece Kitty Spencer popping up in Chinese milk ads recently proved that point.

"It just feels tacky, and it feels like a conflict of interest, and it feels very much like they are cashing in on their royal connections," Vanity Fair Royal Editor Katie Nicholl told the magazine. "Whether or not they're HRH, they're related to the queen. They are members of the royal family and they're using that for their own commercial gain."

Like Harry's cousins, Meghan has experience working in the private sector—and while one door is closing for the couple, another is opening wide for opportunities that royal watchers saw coming years ago, albeit not necessarily for Harry.

"Royals aren't marrying other royals and aren't marrying into the upper classes," royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliam told BBC News when Peter and Autumn tied the knot and subsequently sold their wedding photos. "They're marrying into the middle class and they're marrying for love. Which of course is how it should be and it has this sort of reviving effect—new ideas, new trends—and it means that royal houses won't be so alone. They won't be so fossilized."

It's just that in Harry and Meghan's case, being a little bit alone may work out better in the long run.

Singer Duffy says she retreated from the spotlight after being 'raped and drugged and held captive' - CNN

The "Mercy" singer said she still wasn't sure now was the right time to share but that it felt "liberating" to do so.
"Many of you wonder what happened to me, where did I disappear to and why," she wrote. "The truth is, and please trust me I am ok and safe now, I was raped and drugged and held captive over some days."
Duffy says she survived and spent "thousands and thousands of days ... committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again."
"You wonder why I did not choose to use my voice to express my pain? I did not want to show the world the sadness in my eyes. I asked myself, how can I sing from the heart if it is broken? And slowly it unbroke."
Duffy took home the Best Pop Vocal Album award at the 2009 Grammys for her breakthrough album, "Rockferry." That same year, she was also nominated for Best New Artist.
In 2010, she released another album, "Endlessly," after which she largely retreated from the music scene.
The Welsh artist said that in the coming weeks she'll post a spoken interview in which she will also address fan questions.
She closed by saying, "Please respect this is a gentle move for me to make, for myself, and I do not want any intrusion to my family. Please support me to make this a positive experience."
On social media, fans commended the singer for her bravery.
"Wow, your strength is truly inspiring," one user wrote on Instagram.
"Your music is a reflection of your heart and who you are, beautiful and strong. I pray and hope for a real and long lasting healing," another fan wrote. "We are with you dear, precious @duffy you are incredible and very missed. Fight this thing, don't let it define you or determine your life."

Pete Davidson knew it was 'over' with Ariana Grande after Mac Miller died - CNN

In an extensive interview with Charlamagne Tha God, Davidson talked about a few of his high profile relationships including his engagement to Grande.
The "Saturday Night Live" star and pop singer went public with their romance in May 2018 which was around the same time people became aware that she and Miller had split after two years together.
By June 2018 Davidson and Grande were engaged, but that ended after Miller died in September of that year at the age of 26 from "mixed drug toxicity."
Soon after Davidson and Grande ended their engagement.
"I pretty much knew it was over after that," he said. "That was really horrible and I can't imagine what that sh*t is like."
Davidson said Grande loved Miller deeply and the comic said offered to be there for her during her grief until she didn't need him anymore.
Davidson also said he doesn't love being known more for who he dates than his actual work.
It's also made working on "SNL" a bit awkward, he said, because he's sometimes been the subject of jokes there. That made him consider his exit from the legendary show, he said.
"I really wanted last year to be my last year, but I'm still around and trying to knock it away," he said.

Trump says Harvey Weinstein's guilty verdict sends 'very strong message' - New York Post

President Trump said Tuesday that Harvey Weinstein’s guilty verdicts for rape and a criminal sex act send “a very strong message.”

During a press conference in India, the president was asked about the once-powerful Hollywood mogul, who was found guilty Monday by a jury in Manhattan Supreme Court.

“So I was never a fan of Harvey Weinstein, as you know,” Trump answered. “In fact, he said he was going to work hard to defeat me in the election. How did that work out?”

He continued: “I don’t know too much about the case because you know I’ve been traveling and being at meetings almost every hour of the day, every minute of the day, I haven’t been able to really see too much of it.

“But I was just not a fan of his. I knew him a little bit, not very well, I knew him because he was in New York,” he said. “I will say the people that liked him were the Democrats. Michelle Obama loved him. Loved him. Hillary Clinton loved him.

“He gave tremendous money to the Democrats and I guess my question is will the Democrats be asking for that money back? Because he gave a lot of money to the Democrats and, you know, it’s too bad but that’s the way it worked out.”

Another reporter asked the president about the Weinstein case being viewed as a milestone for the #MeToo movement — and what message Trump could deliver to women in America who are afraid to come forward and share their stories of sexual harassment and assault.

“Well, again, I don’t know the actual results. I haven’t seen too much because I’ve been in India, as you know,” Trump said. “I think that from the standpoint of women, I think it was a great thing. It was a great victory and sends a very strong message. Very, very strong message.”

Weinstein was found found guilty of third-degree rape and first-degree criminal sexual act, but not guilty of the most serious charges — two counts of predatory sexual assault.

Every 'Bachelor' Contestant Should Follow Madison On Fantasy Suite Sex - The Federalist

Every future “Bachelor” contestant should follow Madison Prewett’s lead and demand the object of their affection abstain from sex during the competition. As Madison noted on Monday’s episode, if she were to win the show, Peter would be proposing marriage after having slept with her costar(s) only six days prior. That’s a perfectly reasonable line to draw.

Madison reluctantly told Peter he would need to fight the temptation of the Fantasy Suites if he truly wanted to “move forward” with her. “If next week you were to, like, sleep with somebody else, it would be really hard for me to really, like, move forward in this,” she said. After dates with each of the final three women—and despite professing his love for Madison—Peter admitted to having been “intimate” with another contestant on the show. “I can’t lie to you about that,” he told her.

“I literally can’t talk to you right now,” Madison replied, getting up from the table to walk outside.

Whether Madison left the show over Peter’s decision is still unclear. But her request was entirely fair, and highlights “The Bachelor’s” seedy structure, which encourages men and women to a) pursue marriage while b) potentially enjoying “Fantasy Suites” with each contestant shortly before proposing to one of them. That’s disgusting, and Madison was right to be uncomfortable with the setup. (It’s also worth noting she knew what she was signing up for.)

I don’t like “The Bachelor,” but I understand why millions of people tune in every week. The whole ordeal is too performative for my liking, and the Corinnes are few and far between, mostly because the show needs to cast people plausibly suited for its likable stars. (Who thought Pete was likable, I do not know.) Still, “The Bachelor” deserves credit for casting contestants representative of the Christian community, whose struggles with the temptations of premarital sex are ignored in most of popular culture.

Christian or not, the Fantasy Suite option is gross. Let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that Windmill Pete is genuinely in love with three different women. Sex will not clarify their feelings, it will confuse them. Aside from being a reasonable way to test Peter’s devotion, Madison’s request was in everyone’s best emotional interest.

Producers’ unprecedented decision to have the women share a suite during the overnight date week helps prove that point. If the possibility of Pete’s intimacy with multiple women was uncomplicated and meant little, it would hardly be worth emphasizing the discomfort induced by close quarters. But we know sex is not meaningless, and we know Peter decided to be “intimate” with another contestant after Madison said it could cost him their potential future.

I have no idea where Peter’s heart lies, and I fully understand that it must be odd to have a stable of attractive mates vie desperately for your hand. In terms of ending up together, Pilot Pete told Madison on Monday’s episode, “coming into this week, I could see that with other people, too.” It’s a strange situation, which is precisely what keeps viewers coming back for more.

Nevertheless, every future contestant should do exactly as Madison did and ask their bachelor to abstain from intimacy in the Fantasy Suites. It will mitigate his own pain and amplify his own joy, while also instructively testing his potential spouse, and contributing to the creation of a culture that mitigates the personal pain of their viewers.

If such a request is rooted in faith, that’s great. But religion or not, it’s just common sense. Pete may believe he loves Madison, but if he respected her, he would have been able to exercise some self-control. Hopefully she learned from his decision. Hopefully future contestants did too.

Plácido Domingo apologises to women who accused him of sexual harassment - BBC News

Plácido Domingo has apologised for "causing hurt" to several women who have accused him of sexual harassment.

The opera star resigned as general manager of the Los Angeles Opera after several allegations were made.

A total of 20 women have now accused Domingo of harassment and inappropriate behaviour. He denies all the claims.

"I respect that these women finally felt comfortable enough to speak out," Domingo said in a statement issued to the Los Angeles Times.

"I want them to know that I am truly sorry for the hurt that I caused them,"

He added: "I accept full responsibility for my actions, and I have grown from this experience."

His statement was issued following an investigation into Domingo by a US union which represents opera performers.

The investigation found Domingo had "engaged in inappropriate activity, ranging from flirtation to sexual advances, in and outside of the workplace".

The accusations, which go back as far as the 1980s, were first reported in August by the Associated Press.

It said Domingo had frequently pressured women into sexual relationships, and sometimes professionally punished those who rejected him.

In his statement, Domingo said he had "taken time over the last several months to reflect on the allegations that various colleagues of mine have made against me.

"I understand now that some women may have feared expressing themselves honestly because of a concern that their careers would be adversely affected if they did so. While that was never my intention, no-one should ever be made to feel that way."

Domingo, who is 79, is one of opera's biggest stars, commanding sell-out audiences around the world.

He has been married to his second wife, the soprano Marta Ornelas, since 1962.

Harvey Weinstein Verdict: Guilty on Two Charges - Hollywood Reporter

The former movie mogul has been convicted in his New York sexual assault trial.

A jury of 12 men and women has convicted former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein guilty on two of the five potential criminal charges he faced in his New York County trial.

Weinstein has been convicted of criminal sexual assault in the first degree, based on the testimony of former Project Runway production assistant Miriam Haley, and rape in the third degree, based on the testimony of one-time aspiring actress Jessica Mann.

The verdict was announced on Monday after the jury of seven men and five women spent five days deliberating on his fate.

Weinstein will be sentenced at a later date. He's facing five to 25 years for the criminal sexual assault conviction and 18 months to four years for the third-degree rape conviction.

The Weinstein jury was called in and dismissed shortly after 12 p.m. on Monday.

Judge James Burke thanked the jury for their service. "Thank you for the care and concentration, concern and attention you have given to your deliberations," he said. "You are now dismissed. You may leave the court room."

On Friday afternoon, the jury appeared to suggest that they were deadlocked on the two most serious charges Weinstein is facing, predatory sexual assault, but possibly unanimous on the three lesser charges (criminal sex act, first-degree rape, third-degree rape).

In New York State, a person can be convicted of predatory sexual assault when a jury has determined that the person committed a first degree rape, criminal sexual act or aggravated sexual abuse against more than one other person.

While Weinstein's lawyers said on Friday they would accept a partial verdict, the lead prosecutor said she would not, and Judge James Burke told the jury to "continue your deliberations."

The verdict is the capstone to a lengthy, highly charged and emotional trial that began on Jan. 6 and included the testimony of six women who said — under oath — that Weinstein had sexually assaulted them over the last three decades.

Weinstein also faces four charges in Los Angeles County.

Over the last few weeks, Weinstein has appeared to grow more visually confident in his chances of acquittal, though he has grown mum during the deliberation process, refusing to answer questions posed by journalists in the hallway of the court house.

While limited, his New York County conviction marks a victory for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., who has faced criticism for not indicting Weinstein sooner, and for lead prosecutor Joan Illuzzi.

Harvey Weinstein Jury Reaches Verdict – Update - Deadline

The jury in the Harvey Weinstein sexual misconduct trial has reached a verdict. The verdict has not been announced yet.

This story is breaking…

The jury resumed deliberations Monday morning, returning after Friday’s cliffhanger in which jurors questioned New York Supreme Court Judge James Burke as to whether they were legally allowed a deadlock on two charges with the heaviest possible prison sentence while reaching consensus on lesser counts of rape and assault.

On Friday, Burke instructed the jury to continue its deliberations, urging a consensus on all charges. After a weekend off, jurors were back in the jury room at 9:30 AM ET today. Weinstein arrived at New York State Supreme Court with what looked like a bit more unshaven scruff than usual.

The possible deadlock involves two counts of predatory sexual assault, each carrying a possible lifetime prison sentence and each involving actress and rape accuser Annabella Sciorra and one of the two primary accusers in the trial. To convict on the predatory counts, the jury must find that Weinstein committed crimes against Sciorra and Miriam Haley, and/or Sciorra and Jessica Mann.

Mann and Haley have accused Weinstein of, respectively, rape and sexual assault by forced oral sex. The jury could vote to convict Weinstein of their individual charges — the most serious of which carry possible prison sentences up to 25 years — while either deadlocking or finding not guilty on the predatory charges.

Although the statute of limitations has expired on Sciorra’s claim of rape in 1993-94, her testimony is permitted in conjunction with that of Haley and Mann to establish predatory behavior.

In addition to the predatory counts, which carry prison sentences of 10 years to life, Weinstein is charged with one count of a criminal sexual act in the first degree (against Haley) and two counts of rape (one in the first degree, one in the third, both involving Mann). The first degree counts carry possible prison sentences of five to 25 years; the third degree count, up to four years.

Haley, now 42, was a Project Runway production assistant in 2006 when, she says, Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on her in his Soho apartment on a July night in 2006. Mann, 34, a former actress, model and hairstylist, claimed Weinstein raped her on March 18, 2013, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, resulting in the two counts of rape; the jury can convict on only one of those counts.

Royal Biographer Compares Meghan Markle to a 'Snow Queen' Who Put a 'Sliver of Ice' in Prince Harry's Heart - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex has been criticized for a lot of things — but being compared to a fictional snow queen for making Prince Harry’s heart a bit colder has to be a new one. As the dust begins to settle on the Prince Harry and Meghan royal exit drama, there is still some analysis surrounding whether Prince Harry was influenced by Meghan to make this drastic move.

Prince Harry and Meghan announced their plan to ‘step back’

In January, the Sussexes announced their decision to “step back” from their royal duties in an effort to escape the constant public and media scrutiny they had been up against. Queen Elizabeth worked with them to finalize their plan, with the couple set to officially break their ties with the royal family beginning this spring.

The Sussexes’ most recent statement clarifying their exit, including the detail that they won’t use the “Sussex Royal” name, hasn’t sat well with royal experts.

Royal biographer Angela Levin, in writing for the Daily Mail, points out that “The language is stilted, cold and legalistic, the sentiments juvenile and angry,” adding that the statement “is an expression of childish irritation that insults the most admired person in British public life.”

Levin claims that the statement has everything to do with Meghan. “My experience of Prince Harry is that he is charismatic and intuitive, a man with impeccable manners who is full of consideration to others and lights up in the presence of those who need his help,” the biographer writes.

She adds: “What on earth has happened to that Harry? Why is he in the strange and invidious position of seeming to side with his wife over a loving family that includes the 93-year-old grandmother he dearly loves and who has been his rock?”

She believes Meghan has changed Harry

Levin further shares that the Sussexes “seem sullen and resentful” and worries about the impact Meghan has on Harry. In trying to understand how Prince Harry has changed, Levin writes: “For me, there is only one way to understand his predicament, including this latest, wrong-headed outburst. I am afraid that Meghan is an impulsive woman and, as her past behavior suggests, when she’s had enough of something or someone, she simply ‘moves on.’”

Levin then draws comparisons between Meghan and a fictional character, writing: “I am reminded of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of The Snow Queen, as beautiful as she is cold, who leaves a sliver of ice in a young man’s heart.”

“Captive, a prisoner in her frozen desert, he is angry and indifferent to those who truly love him,” she writes.

Critics aren’t happy with their statement

Among the points in Meghan and Harry’s lengthy statement, they addressed their intention to stop using the word “royal” in the Sussex Royal brand, but their critics are annoyed with the wording.

“While The Duke and Duchess are focused on plans to establish a new non-profit organisation, given the specific UK government rules surrounding use of the word ‘Royal’, it has been therefore agreed that their non-profit organisation will not utilise the name ‘Sussex Royal’ or any other iteration of ‘Royal,’” the statement notes.

Further, the Sussexes share: “While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word ‘Royal’ in any territory (either within the UK or otherwise) when the transition occurs Spring 2020.”

Meghan Markle's BFF Jessica Mulroney Denies Setting Up a Secret Website for the Duke and Duchess - Cosmopolitan.com

Instagram Dinner

Yesterday, a Daily Mail report dropped that Meghan Markle's best friend Jessica Mulroney had allegedly registered a new domain for Meghan and Prince Harry. According to said report, Jessica "registered the website sussexglobalcharities.com last Wednesday through her charity the Shoebox Project Foundation, which supports vulnerable women." So yeah, obviously a lot of people assumed that "Sussex Global Charities" could be in the running for Harry and Meghan's new charity name.

But, turns out the Shoebox Project Foundation in question has nothing to do with Jessica—something she made clear on Twitter:

“If certain investigative journalists were to do their jobs, perhaps they would see that Shoebox Project Foundation is owned by a Mr Roy in North Carolina and has no affiliations or ties to our charity The Shoebox Project. Happy Sunday.”

Glad that's cleared up! But why do the Sussexes even need a new name, you ask? Meghan and Harry actually just announced that they won't be using the word "royal" after stepping down from the fam, which is kinda a problem considering both their website and Instagram are "Sussex Royal."

In their statement, the couple wrote:

"While The Duke and Duchess are focused on plans to establish a new non-profit organisation, given the specific UK government rules surrounding use of the word ‘Royal’, it has been therefore agreed that their non-profit organisation will not utilise the name ‘Sussex Royal’ or any other iteration of ‘Royal.’

For the above reason, the trademark applications that had been filed as protective measures and that reflected the same standard trademarking requests as done for The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, have been removed."

They also noted that "While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word ‘Royal’ in any territory (either within the UK or otherwise) when the transition occurs Spring 2020."

      B. Smith, Restaurateur And Lifestyle Icon, Dies At 70 Of Early-Onset Alzheimer's - NPR

Barbara Elaine Smith, better known as B. Smith, began her career as a model, going on to be a restaurateur, celebrity chef, author, entertainer and lifestyle doyenne. bsmith.com hide caption

      toggle caption
      bsmith.com

The world is less generous, and less welcoming because B. Smith, former model, entertainer and lifestyle doyenne, has left it.

At age 70, Smith succumbed to early-onset Alzheimer's, which she'd been battling for years. She died Saturday at her Long Island home with family nearby.

Plenty of media have described Smith as "The Black Martha Stewart." And superficially, one could see why: both women had been models (Smith appeared on the covers of several fashion magazines, the first brown-skinned black model to be featured on Mademoiselle's cover in the 1970s.)

Both had a genius for cooking and entertaining. Both eventually built an empire based on their skills (food, decorating, entertaining, home keeping). And when people (mostly white people) called Smith the black Martha, they meant it as a compliment.

Smith saw it as well-intended, but short-sighted.

"Martha Stewart has presented herself doing the things domestics and African Americans have done for years," Smith told New York magazine in a 1997 interview. "We were always expected to redo the chairs and use everything in the garden. This is the legacy that I was left. Martha just got there first."

True, but Smith made up for that by diving into everything she did with passion.

Born to a steelworker father and a mother who was a part-time housekeeper, Barbara Elaine Smith left her Western Pennsylvania hometown of Scottsdale for a modeling career right after high school.

Barbara became B. as her modeling career took off.

After a successful career with modeling agency Wilhelmina and several lucrative corporate contracts, Smith became interested in restaurants.

She married her second husband, Dan Gasby in 1992, and together they created an empire that encompassed best-selling cookbooks, the weekly show and a lifestyle magazine that was briefly published by American Express. Eventually there were also housewares, bed linens and even an At Home with B. Smith furniture line.

Smith opened her first eponymous restaurant in Manhattan's theater district in 1986. Two more B. Smith's followed: one near her weekend home on Long Island and the other in the historic Union Station complex in Washington, D.C.

Smith had been showing signs of forgetfulness for a while. In 2013, after she lost her train of thought while she was doing a cooking demonstration on NBC's Today, she sought a doctor's opinion.

The devastating verdict: tests indicated she was in the beginning stages of early-onset Alzheimer's disease. She and Gasby went public with the news in 2014. Smith put on a brave face, and told the public she intended to live and enjoy life until she couldn't.

The B. Smith who appeared in a public service announcement the following year was a woman whose wattage had dimmed considerably. Her disease was progressing swiftly. Her famously radiant smile flashed less frequently. Her sparkling eyes looked vacant, she forgot things easily, and once became lost in Manhattan for several hours.

Despite that, she and Gasby did several interviews to educate the public and destigmatize Alzheimer's. They also wrote a book, Before I Forget, on dealing with the disease. They were determined to try to make a difference, as Alzheimer's is known to be more prevalent in women and African Americans.

The interviews tapered off, though, as Smith's condition continued to deteriorate. She lived quietly with Gasby in their weekend home on Long Island Sound. But someone else was living with them, and seeking to control the narrative.

In 2018 Gasby confirmed the rumors: he had a girlfriend, Alex Lerner, and together they were caring for Smith. Last year, on Today, Gasby explained to friend Al Roker how painful it was to watch Smith fade.

You meet and fall in love with someone, he explained, "(and they are) the perfect person for you, and you watch them slowly dissolve, and you go down with them..."

Some people understood and sympathized. Others, like The View's Sonny Hostin (who'd helped care for a grandmother with Alzheimer's) were appalled.

"I find it very disrespectful that he is with his wife and disrespecting her by being with his girlfriend in their home," an emotional Hostin told her co-hosts.

Gasby has heard his critics, and it bothers him, but he feels strongly that his life counts, too.

"I believe in the sanctity of marriage," he told the Washington Post last year, but not in 'till death do you part. If the person you love, he said, is no longer mentally or emotionally present, he doesn't believe "that you should sit there and watch your life shrivel up..." (He visited The View to face Hostin and explain his side of the story.)

It's a hard call that more and more Americans are going to have to make, as more of us are diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Last year, the Alzheimer's Association estimated 5.8 million people have the disease; 200,000 of those have early onset. As our population continues to age, the numbers continue to climb, and more caregivers will have to ask themselves: how do you honor the life of your loved one while managing to preserve your own?

Royal Critic Attacks Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's 'Staggering Disrespect' for Queen Elizabeth - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex released a statement that provided more details about their exit from the royal family, including their agreement to give up the name “Sussex Royal.” The Sussexes’ critics have taken aim at this statement, with their most vocal critic, Piers Morgan, slamming the couple on Twitter.

The Sussexes won’t use the ‘Sussex Royal’ name

As rumors swirled about whether the queen would ban Prince Harry and Meghan’s use of the Sussex Royal name, the couple released a statement to clear things up.

“While The Duke and Duchess are focused on plans to establish a new non-profit organisation, given the specific UK government rules surrounding the use of the word ‘Royal,’ it has been therefore agreed that their non-profit organisation will not utilise the name ‘Sussex Royal’ or any other iteration of ‘Royal,’” read the statement on the couple’s website.

“For the above reason, the trademark applications that had been filed as protective measures and that reflected the same standard trademarking requests as done for The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, have been removed,” the statement further explained.

They continued: “While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word ‘Royal’ in any territory (either within the UK or otherwise) when the transition occurs Spring 2020.”

      Morgan found the statement disrespectful

The lengthy statement the Sussexes released provided more clarity around their transition but Morgan was quick to find fault with it. “The staggering disrespect these two keep showing to the Queen is outrageous. Who the hell do they think they are?,” he tweeted.

When royal fans challenged Morgan’s thoughts on the matter, he had plenty more to say. He tweeted: “I read it in their own statement, posted to their own website last night, in which they directly dispute the Queen’s right to stop them using the ‘Royal’ tag abroad to flog themselves to bankers. I’ve never seen any royal publicly try to challenge the Queen’s authority like this.”

When another fan said to leave them alone, Morgan made his view clear, tweeting: “Pipe down you clueless, sycophantic clown. They released a lengthy statement last night directly challenging the Queen’s authority. I will continue to support Her Majesty & the Monarchy against the Sussexes’ shameful efforts to have their royal cake and eat it. End.”

Does their statement reveal how unhappy they are?

While the intention of the statement was to quiet rumors as the couple makes their official move away from the royal family, one royal expert believes it’s very telling of how unhappy the Sussexes are about the arrangement.

“The statement’s underlying message is they are very, very unhappy with this arrangement,” royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told The Sun Online, adding, “It was completely unnecessary.”

Fitzwilliams further noted that this “may lead to future trouble — they don’t like the arrangement that is forcing them to step down as working royals and not use their titles, even though they will have them.”

He continued: “They want to use Sussex Royal but by saying the monarchy doesn’t have the power to prevent them from using it — why say that? There’s no point.”

“My hope is the bitterness they seem to feel with the current arrangement will become more positive as months progress,” Fitzwilliams shared.
